DOM “Drawn Over Mandrel” Round Tube
DOM “Drawn Over Mandrel” round tube is a description for the process of how the specific steel tube is produced. Like that of regular mild steel round tube (electric resistance welded tube), the tube is rolled and welded but in the finishing stages of production for DOM, the weld is removed and the tube is cold drawn over a mandrel to give it a tighter tolerance, improved surface finish, and greater strength.
DOM Round Tube Features:
- Competitive Metals stocks DOM in sizes ranging from .375” OD up to 3.5” OD and wall thicknesses ranging from .058” up to .500”.
- DOM is available in non-standard random lengths ranging from 17’ to 24’.
- DOM is desirable for sleeving and bending and therefore ideal for fabricating roll cages and other structures where formability is key.
- DOM is often referred to as a seamless tube when in fact it is not seamless, though the weld is virtually undetectable after the tube completes the manufacturing process.
- While DOM is not a substitute for 4130 Chromoly from a strength standpoint, it is more cost effective and usually more than adequate for most applications.
- Often used when manufacturing parts that require high stress, weldability, and workability like that of race cars, motorcycle frames, engine mounts, bearings, bushings, etc.
